In Mathew 5:3, Jesus states the beattitude, "Blessed are the poor in spirit". Unfortunately, many people don't know what "poor in spirit" really means. I've talked to both kids and adults who didn't fully understand. It made me think to check different biblical translations of the verse. I found that among the translations that didn't literally write "poor in spirit", there were different interpretations of the meaning of the phrase.
I'm not going to go into more detail right now, but I leave the challenge to whoever reads this: Think about what it means to be "poor in spirit" and if you have time, look up different translations of Mathew 5:3 to see other interpretations. Then ask yourself, who are the "poor in spirit" and am I one?

When we're unable to be somewhere (say, to support a friend) due to other pressing commitments, we say, for example, "I'll be there in spirit". We can say the same thing about the poor. No, I'm not poor in reality, so I cannot sympathize with the poor, but I can empathize with them (note the difference between sympathy and empathy). Our duty is to look after those with less: donate to the food bank or to clothing drives, buy a meal for a poor person, whether you know him/her or not, assist in training programs to get unemployed people working, etc...There are many ways to live out poverty "in spirit" [SMILE]
